Children First

WHAT IS CHILDREN FIRST?

The Children First Program is a nurse home visiting program that follows the Dr. David Old’s Nurse Family Partnership Model.  Highly trained nurses make home visits to low resource, first time parents teaching them about pregnancy, nutrition, fetal development and how to care for themselves and their baby after delivery.  It is a voluntary program, and is offered at no cost by the Oklahoma City County Health Department.  Clients must be enrolled prior to 29 weeks gestation.  The nurse and client schedule weekly, bi-weekly and monthly visits until the baby reaches his or her second birthday.  The mom and baby then graduate from the Children First Program.

The nurses follow well-developed and well-researched program protocols that focus on the following domains:

  • Personal Health of Mother and Child

  • Environmental Health

  • Life Course Development of the Mother

  • Maternal Role

  • Family and Friends
